Betty Broderick - Don't piss her off...

I spent the evening being lazy and rather hung-over/tired watching Lifetime: Television for Women (and Gay Men). Guess what was on?? Her Final Fury: Betty Broderick, The Last Chapter. It's the sequel to A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story.

I can't get enough of the Betty Broderick movies. I bet I've seen the first one three times and this was the second time I've seen the sequel. Talk about a pissed off bitch and a real life portrayal of the term "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." She inspires me.

For those of you who don't watch Lifetime, this is a true crime story that took place in San Diego in 1989. Betty's husband, Dan, a very powerful San Diego attorney, left her for a younger woman *after* she put him through law and medical school, then raised four children. Then he took the house, money, kids, etc. So she shot him. And his new wife. In their bed. Awesome. Go git 'em, tigress!!

Meredith Baxter (of TV's Family Ties fame) played Betty and was nominated for an Emmy. Doesn't Betty look like Meredith (see below)??

The real Betty - She's cool.

The Happy Brodericks - really, that isn't Meredith

Betty and Dan Broderick - before she done gone crayzeeee

Another favorite Lifetime movie of Meredith's (she may even be in more than Jane Seymour) is After Jimmy, in which she must come to terms with the suicide of her eldest (and cute) son. I even cried a little when I watched that movie. Really, I did. (Yes, I have tear ducts) I just love Meredith Baxter. And Betty Broderick.

Jimmy shot himself. Poor Meredith Baxter.

And when did she get rid of the Birney part of her last name??

The Keatons in Family Ties, an '80s classic
Steve, Elise, Mallory, Alex, Jennifer
Andy came later

A bit of trivia: Meredith and Michael Gross were born on the very same day, June 21, 1947. Weird.

  • How the heck do you know all of this M-B-B trivia? It fascinates me, a long Lifetime Television fan.

  • I heart Meredith Baxter(-Birney) too. Gosh, did you see on the imdb that she's got 5 kids? Wow. I guess the last two were twins.

  • I saw that that movie was on this week. I totally remember watching it.

  • My personal favorite Lifetime TV movie is with I belive Holly Hunter portraying the crazy bitch mother of a high school girl trying to make the cheerleading squad, and Holly hires a hitman to kill the mother of the team captain when her daughter doesn't make the team.

Ahhh, nothing says bad TV quite like Lifetime, I sometimes get sucked into episodes of Designing Women at 2am.

  • Ahhh, yes - the classic "Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom." I've seen it a couple times - it's very high-brown entertainment! Funny that Holly Hunter, an Oscar winner, played the Mom. Guess she can't have 'em all!

  • My husband calls Lifetime "PMS TV." I call it a happy Sunday afternoon... especially if it comes with chips and ice cream. :-)

  • I have read a couple of books about Betty and Dan Broderick.

    It is an infuriating story.

I prolly woulda killed him, too.

I enjoy your blog very much.

    Cheers-

  • I think Betty Brodrick was driven insane by her pompous cad of a husband....hate to speak ill of the dead...but. I can identify, my soon to be ex is an attorney, and found out he was having an affair with an older ugly looking bimbo. After 23 years of marriage, including much turmoil he caused through the years, my best revenge was to let her keep him.

  • You people must be REALLY young, if you don't remember Meredith Baxter in a show called "Family." That was one of the coolest shows on air back in the late 70's and she played the eldest sister in this really cool family ...sort of a late night (8pm) show????? Would have been back when Charlie's Angels was on????? Duh? Anyone out there over the age of 25...and if so, I don't think you could possibly know how the real Betty felt in being dumped for the younger woman!

  • Betty Broderick should not be allowed to EVER be released from prison!

She murdered two people; destroyed property; and felt everyone owed her.

Her children deserve better than this worthless Mother!

  • omg -- what took betty so long? I would have not put up with it nearly that long.....she really showed what could happen if you let society tell you exactly what to expect out of life

  • I feel awful for their children and I dont think anyone has the right to take someones life into their own hands......but when you have made your family your life and all of a sudden someone rips it out from beneath you, I think it would drive me to do insane things too. I am an aging mother of 3 and if this ever happened to me I dont know if I could be held accountable for the actions I would take. I feel sorry for Betty and hope she gets the second chance she deserves.

  • Matt, it wasn't Holly Hunter in that movie. It was an actress named Lesley Anne Warren who is much taller and prettier! The real Wanda Holloway served 10 years in prison.

Betty Broderick is possibly the most intriguing woman in the prison system today. Nothing justifies murder but these people had been pushing her buttons since 1984. What bothered her was the fact that this was the thanks her husband gave her for all those years of hard work and support...by carrying on with a young woman who had no self-respect. Her own identity was tied in with that of her family, her husband. When she lost that her world fell down. Some people feel that she should've simply moved on with her life but we all react differently. How could anyone be expected to look the other way while their spouse walks all over them? And in a worse display of insensitivity, decides to replace them with a "new" person? She built a life with her husband and could not, would not accept that he was slowly pushing her out of this life. Murder is never OK but neither is it acceptable to dispose of somebody after they've helped you, as Dan did to Betty. You treat them with compassion and respect even if you no longer love them. More than anything this is what drove her to stalk and kill them. You don't throw away 16 years of marriage if your spouse truly loved you and did all he/she could to make it work. He was undoubtedly very bright and worked hard but she worked even harder to afford the "good life", the American dream for both of them.

Meredith Baxter was soooo convincing in this movie that I felt like she WAS Betty! The eerie music only added to the suspense. You can literally see Betty coming undone in this riveting portrayal. You can see the pain underneath the hate. Her eyes were full of tears when she hissed "you owe me" to her husband before their divorce. You can see the insecurity she feels when Dan first spots Linda, the other woman. Meredith B. had Betty's clothes, short blonde hair, and tough demeanor down to a science. The only person whose role could've been more plumped up was that of Linda Kolkena. Michelle Johnson did a good job but I think there should've been some insight into her character as well as Betty's. Like her background and what compelled her to carry on with a married man. Michelle Johnson looks nothing like the real Linda, who had long blond hair and sharper features.

If I were to remake this movie, this would be the cast:

    Young Betty...Charlize Theron

Betty...Meredith Baxter (can't see anybody else playing this!)

    Young Dan...Peter Facinelli

    Dan...Mark Harmon

    Kim...Katie Wright

    Lee...Thora Birch

    Danny...Haley Joel Osment

    Rhett...Frankie Muniz

    Linda Kolkena...Jeri Ryan

    Kerry Wells...Reese Witherspoon

    Betty's mother...Susan Sarandon

Charlize Theron would be ideal as a young Betty circa 1969, because Betty was beautiful then. They're both the same height (5'11") and both blonde. Jeri Ryan would be convincing as the other woman because she's sexy and beautiful, with long hair and sharp features.

  • Why'd the new wife deserve to die? It's not like she did anything wrong other than marry a guy who happened to have an unhinged wife.

Plus her poor kids end up fatherless and motherless after her actions.

It was a despicable and retarded thing to do.

  • hclhfoys
She may have been beautiful but u don't take a life even if u were the wronged one. Linda was wrong to jump in with a married man so I have no sympathy for her as a person even though she should not not have been killed but when u play with fire u get burned. if she had met him latere after the divorce it would have been different but it looks like she had a very big influrence on the divorce

  • I think she dropped the "Birny" after she divorced her husband David in 1990. I'm looking @ "After Jimmy", now. And, yes Peter Facinelli is cute, but I'm looking @ the movie not just because of the subject matter, but also because he was in the movie "Twilight" so, I've become fascinated w/ his other work.

  • Betty broderick should never have gone to jail in the first place. Dan broderick was a cheating bastard who used her to put him through law school then replaced her with a younger model. He deserved what he got as did the home wrecking slut Linda Kolkena. They were not good people good people dont have affairs and break up marriages and then torment the innocent spouse.

By Blogger beebs01, at 5:49 AM

  • No Betty should not have to prison she should have been put in a bed and shot just like Dan and Linda. She was not the first woman that a husband left and was not the last. She thinks she is above the law and can do as she please. I'm glad she went to prison I just don't think she didn't get enough I pray she spends the rest of her life there.
